Application of laser welding in electronic industry

In recent years, driven by electronic technology and 5G technology, the trend of global electronic products becoming thinner and more precise has become more obvious. Under the consumer’s demand for high endurance, high security and personalization of electronic products, major battery manufacturers are also gradually competing to produce new rechargeable button batteries with higher energy density and various specifications and materials. With the increasing difficulty in processing new button batteries, the traditional processing technology is difficult to solve the pain points of the new button battery processing technology. Compared with the traditional processing technology, the laser welding technology, due to its many advantages, can well meet the diversity of button battery processing technology, reduce the damage to the battery and avoid the waste of raw materials. The following describes the application of laser welding technology in welding button batteries.

The button battery welding pin is complex. If the operation is improper, the battery is easily damaged by welding (short circuit caused by internal diaphragm welding) or the solder pad is easy to fall off. Because the button battery is small and thin, unprofessional spot welding will do great harm to the button battery, especially to the negative pole of the button battery. The negative pole shell is covered with lithium metal, which has very good conductivity and thermal conductivity. The lithium metal is in direct contact with the internal diaphragm (isolating positive and negative substances) of the battery, so improper spot welding method is likely to cause damage to the battery diaphragm, which will cause internal short circuit of the button battery.

66Laser application process of button battery:
1.Shell and cover plate: laser etching of button steel shell;
2.
Electric core section: welding the positive and negative poles of the winding core with the shell cover, laser welding the shell cover with the shell, and welding the sealing nails;
3.
PACK section of module: electric core screening, side pasting, positive and negative electrode welding, post welding inspection, size inspection, upper and lower adhesive tapes, air tightness inspection, blanking sorting, etc.

When using button battery, it is necessary to weld the lug terminal on the battery. The common welding method is precision laser spot welding. The adoption of precision laser spot welding can effectively avoid and solve the problems existing in ordinary high-frequency spot welding, so that the cells to be spot welded have fewer false welds, firm welding spots, good consistency, and beautiful and neat welding spots. Especially, the local welding between the cell surfaces by laser spot welding is very short, so there is no breakdown phenomenon.
